Active Ingredient: Praziquantel
Description: White tablets

Pharmacology: Praziquantel has broad-spectrum anti-Schistosoma and anti-Tapeworm. Has a high activity to adult tapeworm and larvae. Also has a good effect on killing Schistosoma.
The mechanism of praziquantel on tapeworm has not to be determined, yet. Possibly interaction with the cell membrane phospholipid on tapeworm. Resulting in sodium,potassium and calcium outflow from the cell. In vitro, low concentration praziquantel influence creeping and damage the sucker of tapeworm. In high concentration, the drug induce the worm contraction action and irreversible. In addition, praziquantel can cause the membrane vacuolization of tapewarm, the body fragment cracking. For Schistosoma and Trematodes, Praziquantel may cause the calcium ions to flow into the cell and kill the parasite.
By oral administrate praziquantel is rapidly and almost completely be absorb. But there is a significant first pass effect. In dog after 0.5-2hrs reach plasma concentration peak, in sheep there are 2 hrs. The blood concentration is longer when given by IM or SC. Praziquantel distribute in variety tissues, especially in liver and kidney. They can pass the BBB into the central nervous system. The of wide distribution characteristics is to get rid of larvae of various, organs, (brain, muscle, visceral and abdominal). After absorb, Praziquantel quick metabolism into inactive form by liver, mainly excreting by urine. The drug half-life about 3-3.5hrs. in dog and rabbit. Only few excreting by prototype from urea or feces. 

Drug interactions: Antagonist with albendazole, dexamethasone, these drugs may reduce the blood concentration of praziquantel.

Interactions:

Administrate simultaneously with albendazole, dexamethasone will decrease the concentration of praziquantel in blood. 

 

Indications: Anti-Helminthiases drugs, mainly for Schistosomiasis, Taeniasis, and Cysticercosis.

 

Administration and Dosage: Base on Praziquantel, Oral, Dog and Cat: 2.5-5mg of Praziquantel /kg of body weight or follow the veterinarian’s instruction.

 

Adverse reactions: 

1. Anorexia, vomiting , diarrhea occasionally occur in dog, but the incidence is less than 5%.  Adverse reaction in cat is rare.

 

Precautions:

1. Administrate careful for kitten less than 4 weeks old and puppy less than 6 weeks old.

2. The product of combination of praziquantel and febantel can be used for all ages 

of dogs and cats and during the pregnant period.

 

Withdrawal Time: No need.
